There are many easy lifestyle changes that you can make to help conserve the Earth for future generations. Check out these small things you can start today to make your home and your life a little greener.
1. Turn the Faucets Off
According to the EPA, just by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, you can save up to 8 gallons of water, which adds up to more than 200 gallons a month. You can also save water by turning off the faucet while washing your hands. During the COVID-19 outbreak, washing your hands is important, but you can turn the faucet off for the 20 seconds that you are scrubbing with soap! Here’s what the CDC says about properly washing your hands.
2. Use a Cloth Towel Instead of Paper Towels
Try using a cloth towel to clean surfaces and dry your hands. You’ll save money in the long run and you won’t need to worry about keeping a stock of paper towels.
3. Switch to a Reusable Water Bottle
According to earthday.org, Americans purchase about 50 million single-use plastic water bottles each year, which averages about 13 plastic water bottles per month for every person in the U.S. By using a reusable water bottle, you could save an average of 156 bottles annually, and you’ll also save money! There are lots of beautiful and functional reusable water bottles out there, so find one you like and start reducing your single-use plastic!
4. Fix Something
Is something in your home broken? Instead of buying something new to replace it, try taking the time to fix it instead! The less waste going into the dump the better. Especially with COVID-19, you may have some extra time to fix a leaky faucet or repair that lamp.
5. Start a Garden
Growing some of your own food can save you money and reduce food waste. Plus, gardening is just plain fun! Try starting a vegetable garden in your yard, or planting a simple herb garden on your windowsill. You can even grow fruits and vegetables by using produce cuttings and table scraps. Give it a try!
