Delaware State Parks is home to 17 gorgeous parks across The First State. From world class beaches to scenic inland ponds, guests are able to step into their own adventure the moment they enter a Delaware State Park. But have you ever given thought to what it takes to bring our parks to life each day? As an intern with Delaware State Parks, you could have the opportunity to learn first-hand what it takes, all while gaining practical hands-on experience in your field.
The Delaware State Parks Internship Program provides opportunities for qualified students and career-focused graduates to apply learned theory and experience to practical situations and to observe an organization first-hand. The Delaware State Parks Internship Program is a training program that provides practical work experience and valuable training in the many and varied careers in the State Park system all while working for a reputable organization within the State of Delaware.
“While interning for Delaware State Parks I was pushed each day to expand my knowledge and grow professionally,” said intern Londin Boots. Londin, an enterprise development intern out of the central office in Dover, spent 6 months learning about the business side of Delaware State Parks where she assisted with large scale sponsorships, communications with local community business partners, and was responsible for managing the Delaware State Parks corporate pass program. “The diverse and welcoming culture allowed me to learn from not only my supervisor, but from the different departments and people within the parks system. I was encouraged and given multiple opportunities to go out into the parks, allowing me to see first hand my work from the office being implemented, as well as cultivate ideas for new and ongoing projects. Overall, this unique experience gave me a new love for each of Delaware’s State Parks as well as the confidence and knowledge to enter into the work force in the near future.”
Opportunities are available for a variety of disciplines including education, history, engineering, theatre and performing arts, environmental stewardship, and marketing. Interns apply for a specific position and are assigned to a site with a field expert who will mentor and supervise the intern’s activities. Interns then work closely with the field expert to design an individual plan detailing duties and responsibilities.
In some cases, interning in Delaware State Parks can lead to additional opportunities. “My career with Delaware State Parks started right at Cape Henlopen State Park as an Environmental Education Intern,” said Abby Shepard, now the marketing Director for Delaware’s park system. “By working in our parks, I was able to get a better understanding of the work that happens day to day. What I learned working in our parks became directly transferable to the work I’m still doing for Delaware State Parks today!”
While interns certainly learn plenty during their time at the parks, there is still plenty of fun to be had. Our interns receive exciting perks including complimentary park admission into Delaware State Park as well as the opportunity to enjoy most programs and activities for free. In addition, many positions include a weekly stipend, and free housing opportunities are also available to interns.
