Delaware is known for many things – pristine beaches, rich history, vibrant urban spaces – but snow sports certainly isn’t one of them. Warm ocean air temperatures make measurable snowfall a rarity, but when the state does get snow, Delawareans know how to have some winter fun! Read on for our recommendations for snowfall fun in Delaware State Parks.
As with any winter weather, preparation is key. Before heading out to state parks, check our website and park-specific social media pages for updates about closings or delays. While the parks won’t close, gate openings may be delayed while we work to plow or clear debris.
We ALL get excited for a good snow day, but don’t forget to mind your park manners. Never sled, snowboard or walk on beach dunes. Dunes are fragile wildlife habitats and protection for beaches and coastal communities, and any human activity on them damages the delicate ecosystems which keep them stable and strong. Instead, enjoy other unique winter activities listed below. Through all of your outdoor fun, remember to stay on marked trails and designated sports fields. Leave the parks better than you found them – carry out what you carry in during your visit.
Sledding at Brandywine Creek State Park is a Delaware classic. This 200-yard long hill is picturesque and makes for a nice, long ride. Follow signs for the Hawk Watch area upon entering the park’s main entrance at 41 Adams Dam Road, Wilmington. Warm up at the Park Office & Nature Center after and explore unique exhibits. Learn more and find maps here.
Known for mountain biking, White Clay Creek is also great for sledding. There are numerous hills perfect for sledding in the park, but we’re partial to the Carpenter Recreation Area at 880 New London Road, Newark. Learn more and find maps here.
A Wilmington staple! Hit the hill at Rockford Tower to enjoy a nice long ride and iconic view at Lookout Drive, Wilmington. Learn more and find maps here.
Finding hills downstate can be challenging due to the state’s unique geography, characterized by flat lands of the Coastal Plain. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have any snow day fun! Try some of these fun options.
Wide trails and flat lands make for great cross-country skiing and snowshoeing!
Head to one of the sports fields or playgrounds for the ultimate fort building and snowball battle landscape. Use caution if you explore the playground equipment.
Hiking in snow is an entirely different experience than hiking in fair weather. See trails from a new perspective and refresh your lungs in the chill.
An underrated snow activity, birding is significantly easier in the snow. The lack of vegetation and white backdrop makes birds stand out. Plus, it’s waterfowl season in Delaware – spot cold-weather ducks, geese and the occasional puffin-like razorbill! Note: never interact with dead or injured wildlife, particularly birds during the current avian influenza outbreak.
A fresh snowfall turns parks into a wildlife storyteller’s dream! Spot tracks like a rabbit’s leaps or a fox’s winding trail, each offering a glimpse into the lives of local animals. Bring along a smartphone app to identify prints—it’s a fun and educational way to connect with nature and appreciate the wildlife that braves the chilliest days.
We get it – snow isn’t for everyone. If it’s not your cup of tea, you can still cozy up in parks! Visit our nature centers, museums and historic sites to expand your horizons. Or, catch an educational program led by our talented team of interpretive guides.
However you choose to celebrate snowy season – get out there! Stay safe and make some memories.
